Luxury flat, in historic building, in Funchal city centre.

Bual or Boal is a Portuguese grape variety used for the production of Madeira Wine, widely cultivated during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Bual is part of a group of properties called "The Wine Lodges", located in the heart of the city in a historic building, which houses one of the most important Madeira wine cellars belonging to the iconic Blandy family.
With a decoration thought to detail, where elegance coexists in symbiosis with the building's history, this property offers excellent comfort and luxury details without equality.
The flat has generous spaces, making it perfect for a holiday with a group of friends or family.
Situated on the second floor, in its total area we find a master bedroom, with double bed and two balconies overlooking the Municipal Garden. The guest bedroom is equipped with two single beds and the living room has a sofa bed for two people.
This property accommodates a maximum of six people.

AREA
The property is located in the noble and central area of Funchal. From this property, you will be able to know all the downtown and main points of interest. This flat is situated right next to the famous Municipal Garden of Funchal and very close to the Funchal Marina and the Municipal Theatre.
In the same building of the property you can visit one of the most important Madeira wine lodges Blandy's Wine Lodges is open daily for tastings and guided tours. In these same lodges you may get to know and purchase a wide range of wines, which you may later pick up at the airport after passing through customs. Guests of this property have one free ticket per couple.
Another must is the bar and restaurant "1811 Wine Bar", which is located in the same building. Here, you can enjoy unique delicacies accompanied by excellent wines. Our guests are granted an exclusive discount in this fantastic space.
In the city centre there is plenty of information about all kinds of activities you can do during your holiday: cultural activities, radical activities, activities linked to nature... whatever the purpose of your visit to Madeira Island!

GETTING AROUND
The best option to get to the property will be the transfer. Ask us to book one with our local partners. It is cheaper than the taxis you find at the airport.
If you rent a car, any navigation app can easily find the address.

ACCESS TO PROPERTY
You have access to all areas of the property.

INTERACTION
We are always available to help or answer questions. We do our best to reply all requests. We also have an app for guests with all the important information about the property and other useful information for your stay.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS
- According to Portuguese law, all guests are required to present a valid ID. (passport or identity card).
- Check-in hour must be scheduled in advance. If it is not scheduled within a maximum of 48 hours before, guests will be subject to the availability of our team.
- All bed linen and towels are provided. We can also put a baby cot, a high chair and a baby bath if needed, but you should request. There are a first aid kit, extinguishers and fire blanket in the property.

ATTENTION
Please be advised that a Tourist Fee will be charged to all persons staying overnight in the municipality of Funchal. Thus, all customers staying in tourist resorts and/or accommodation establishments, aged 13 or over, will be charged €2.00 per person/night, up to a maximum of 7 nights and a maximum of €14.00 per person/stay. When you arrive, you will receive a link to pay this municipal tax.

We loved the apartment and it was equipped well for our needs.It was a good central location convenient for shopping and great restaurants.
The communication was very good with the staff and they were quick to respond when I had a question or a need such as a taxi to the airport which they do offer.
Loved the historic nature of the apartment and access to the Blandy Wine facilities.
The fact that there is no elevator may be a challenge to some to carry large luggage up a few flights but we made out okay.
Took us a minute to understand the garbage and recycling room experience.

A localização realmente o ponto mais forte do alojamento. O conforto das camas também é relevante salientar.
As fotografias não correspondem á realidade. Existe falta de cuidado em vários aspetos...
Chão podre em algumas zonas da casa, mau cheiro de esgotos, escoamento de águas extremamente lento (chuveiro e lavatórios).
Porta do quarto não fecha (não havendo espaço entre a porta e a cama)
Casa com bastante potencial mas a precisar de grandes obras.

Maderia is beautiful and Bual Apartment is situated right in the centre of Funchal. Bual was perfect for our three week stay and so close to everything that we needed - shops, supermarkets, transport, restaurants, cafes, the sea front etc.

Bual is a lovely apartment and very spacious. It’s probably ready for some redecoration especially the bathroom which was a bit smelly at times. However, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and those minor issues haven’t stopped us booking again for next year.

An Island Apart were good hosts and very responsive with communication that was clear and timely.

Very roomy apartment of great historic character in a fantastic location for visiting Funchal and surprisingly quiet given the central location.
Won't suit everyone (for example, 2nd floor stair access will be very difficult for any with mobility issues) but for those it does, couldn't be bettered.

Had an enjoyable two weeks in the Bual suite. Auto check in is easy and the staff communicate by text messaging. The location is ideal for the promenade, the old town and the newer part of town. The suite is more spacious than the photos indicate and has good facilities. The air conditioning in the bedrooms is very effective and quiet, the kitchen and utility rooms are both well equipped. The main bedroom is very large and the bright lounge has a great holiday feel to it with the windows open and the breeze blowing in past the voile. Standing on the Juliet balcony there is a nice view over to the park across the street. Good restaurants very close. Cable channels on good size TV including Sky news to keep you updated. Highly recommended for your Funchal stay. Also recommend you use the suggested taxi service on your booking (around 20-25 euros to/from airport) and reliable.

We had a great week in this lovely apartment. It is very beautiful inside and has a lovely view of a tropical garden .

Die Lage ist sehr zentral. Gegenüber ist eine toller Park zum Chillen und Vögelgezwitscher zum Genießen.
Die Wohnung ist sehr großzügig und nett eingerichtet.
Nach der Halbzeit wurden Bettwäsche und Handtücher gewechselt. Top!
Einen Stern 🌟 Abzug gibt es für das Bad. Abflussgeruch war dominant. Kommt in Altbau öfter vor und die Duschwanne lief aus. Man müsste schauen wie man duscht, damit das Wasser nicht rausläuft. Das war bisschen nervig.
Wir haben nicht gekocht, weil in der Nähe tolle Restaurant vorhanden sind.
Die Lage ist nicht super ruhig. Wenn am Hafen Veranstaltungen sind, dann kann man die Musik schon mal hören.
Das hat uns aber nicht gestört.
Wir haben den Aufenthalt sehr genossen!

Very good location, huge apartment with great atmosphere. Kitchen is perfectly equipped and very clean. Two big rooms, big living room. There is also a small utility room with the window (!) and small sink (!), you can wash, dry or iron your clothes there - unexpected and very appreciated.
Bathroom is big, but old, it could be clean, but still you can feel that. But from the point of overall great feeling from the entire nicely renovated old building and apartment, it is not worth to focus on it, enjoy the rest :)

I mean it’s a lovely appartement - on a lovely location in the old city center. But we asked for a babybed upon booking - which was confirmed .

When we arrived - there was no baby equipment (bed and chair) Upon arrival we contacted them and informed them the stuff was missing. They say they would fix it - but never did.

Très bel appartement, très spacieux et bien décoré !
La vue sur le jardin municipal et l’emplacement sont aussi très agréables.
Une très belle cuisine, avec beaucoup de matériel… mais très peu d’assiettes (5) et de couverts (4 ou 5 fourchettes) : le lave-vaisselle doit tourner tout le temps…
L’odeur dans la salle de bain n’est pas toujours agréable.

The apartment is certainly stylish but some of the amenities need refreshing to return it to the ‘luxury apartment’ it was once.
The shower and bathroom needs some refreshing it has mouldy mastic around the shower and some rusty fixtures. The shower water pressure was very low and we struggled to get a hot shower for 3 days. The agent was not responsive to a request to rectify until we actually had water leaking through the ceiling in kitchen they then repaired both and gave a 10% refund. Otherwise the apartment is well kept we found there were not sufficient pillows and the beds are quite hard for us. The kitchen and equipment was great everything we needed.
The lounge has a lovely view over the park. The air conditioning in lounge and bedrooms were perfect. There was often an awful smell as you entered the building which came from the bins in a room off the entrance. It is an old traditional building and you should take account of that but It is perfectly located in a wonderful area

Nous avons passé une semaine agréable au Wine Lodges. L'appartement est idéalement situé, en face du jardin municipal, à quelques minutes à pied du port, du centre historique et de petits restaurants sympathiques. L'appartement est très vaste, très lumineux, aéré et dans un immeuble tranquille. Il n'est toutefois pas tout neuf; quelques désagréments sont liés à son ancienneté (sanitaires à rénover notamment). La cuisine est refaite, et la buanderie est un plus. La literie est confortable. Attention pour le parking ; le parking du centre commercial voisin n'est pas ouvert le dimanche.

La ubicación y la vista.
Llegamos a las 16.00 y nos encontramos con un piso extremadamente sucio: la alfombra del salón estaba cubierta de migas de pan y pelos, junto con un trozo de maíz cerca de la ventana. Las cortinas estaban a punto de caerse y una de las dos habitaciones no estaba lista. A pesar de que Jessica envió al equipo de limpieza que hizo la cama en 5 minutos (quién sabe si tuvieron tiempo de cambiar las sábanas), todo seguía sucio y desagradable. Mandé un mensaje a Jessica para decírselo y mi mensaje se quedó sin respuesta hasta ahora. Decidimos no usar la cocina debido a las condiciones. Además, el cuarto de baño despedía un olor terrible, tan desagradable que no se podía quedar en el piso. Estamos muy decepcionados, llevamos tiempo viajando, pero hacia mucho que no nos había pasado algo parecido. Era como estar en un hostal de mala calidad, pero pagando el precio de un hotel de 4 estrellas. Es una lástima porque, con algunas reformas y más cuidado, el piso podría estar agradable, especialmente con sus balcones que dan a un bonito parque.

Poor management by An Island Apart. Only 2 bath towels and no hand towels at apartment on check-in and NO kitchen towels. We called and were told they would deliver more. Had to call again next day and then we got towels. At apartment tidy up the next monday they left ONLY 1 bath towel and very poor cleaning job. NO broom in apartment to sweep up the glass from the wine bottle that fell out of the fridge. Dining ares walls are scuffed up and really need a paint job. Blandy's should be ashamed to have their name on the apartment. extremely poor value at nearly 900 Euros per week!!!

The accommodation was in an amazing location right in the centre of Funchal. Lovely building with loads of character and charm. Very comfortable and met all our holiday needs. Supermarket within 5 minutes for essential supplies and a huge variety of bars and restaurants on the doorstep. We had a private taxi for a day tour round the island which was great value (used the company who An Island use for the airport transfers).
We had a great week and would love to return.

Esta casa situada no centro é uma experiência por si. Edifício antigo, muito bem localizado, mas renovado com extremo bom gosto! As áreas são grandes e muito amplas, muito bem iluminado com diversas janelas e varandas. Cozinha bem equipada e camas confortáveis. Gostaria de ter encontrado o espaço limpo com maior cuidado, muitas tapeçarias manchadas e com alguma acumulação de pó. Found you were good people to deal with.
Will not return to Madeira because of the delays at Madeira airport.
We had to wait over an hour just to clear immigration , being elderly we found this both tiring and distressing . The queue's are entirely avoidable by opening up more checkouts.
There were well over 1000 people in the queue and the airport authorities took no action to remedy the situation.

Casa pulitissima e adatta per 6 persone, ci sono spazi comuni grandi in cui poter trascorrere serate tranquille in compagnia. C'è un unico bagno ma costruito con separazione degli ambienti in maniera tale da poter essere usato da più persone contemporaneamente avendo un minimo di privacy. Posizione fantastica in pieno centro con affaccio sull'oceano. Si sentono un po' di rumori dalla strada ma assolutamente sopportabili. Self check-in utile con codici di ingresso forniti tempestivamente. Consiglio questo appuntamento per una vacanza a funchal. Ci tornerò.

Spacious apartment that is very nicely furnished and up to date. The photos are very accurate. The kitchen is well equipped and the beds are very comfortable. Good pressure in the shower and plenty of hot water. The location is excellent. The Lodges are in the heart of the town facing a beautiful park and within easy walking distance to the supermarket and many wonderful restaurants. It was very quiet at night.
This is NOT about the property itself but it was frustrating to be getting mixed messages and communication. The description of property facilities in relation to parking it says - Private Parking is possible at a location nearby (reservation Needed) and costs €5 per day. However when I contacted the property I was told this property doesn’t have a parking place. When I questioned again stating what is on the site I was given the name of two car parks near by but I would have to reserve myself. When we arrived at the Lodges I read in the Welcome/ information folder in regards to Parking- “in case you need a place in the car park. You must ask us directly so we can provide you with an access card and location plan. This service has a daily cost of €4.50 is also stated that the parking card should always be left in the mailbox of your apartment at the time of checkout.” I called the person responsible for Our check in and she asked me was it already booked. When I say no she told me she would contact the reservations team and they would call me. I heard nothing else further. We did get ourselves sorted with a 24 hour car park 10 minutes walk away for €4 per day. We could have paid €9 per day at the one 2 doors down but it opens 8am to 8pm and we were leaving at 4am on the last day.

Stayed for a few days in the second-floor Bual apartment accessible through a very wide stair. The apartment is overlooking the Municipal Garden with a gorgeous pink Silk Floss tree in full bloom in October and visible through the big living and main bedroom windows. The apartment is even more spacious than the photos suggest. It has very high ceilings and wide plank floors. The furniture is very comfortable. The A/C temperature is individually controlled in the living room and the 2 bedrooms. The kitchen is well appointed. The free bottle of wine, card and grocery bag were a nice touch. The La Vie Shopping Centre with the Pingo Doce grocery store is only 450m away. The main sites in Funchal are in walking distance. There are many good restaurants in the area. The apartment is very quiet at night. It is very easy to be picked up by organized tours from the entrance. Overall, a very enjoyable stay.

The house has an amazing, cozy vibe and has everything you need to have a great stay.
Loved the high ceiling and the well lit rooms with windows everywhere.

Der Aufenthalt war ein Traum. Die Wohnung war gut eingerichtet und hatte alles nötige zur Selbstversorgung. Man ist gleich im Zentrum von Funchal. Das ist sehr praktisch für viele Aktivitäten von dortigen Anbietern. Wenn man einen reinen Wanderurlaub plant, dann wäre die Wohnung aber falsch gelegen ;)
Wir waren in diesem Apartment sehr gerne und es ist eine top Empfehlung.

Ruim appartement mrt hoge plafonds, met airco, inclusief welkomstpakket met 2 Portugese wijnen. 2 aparte slaapkamers en een slaapbank in de woonkamer. Ruime keuken met eetkamer. En 2 franse balkons.
Het complex is iets gehorig. Dus je moet stil zijn en rekening houden met de onderburen. Maar dat is meestal geen probleem omdat je de hele dag op pad bent. Alleen bij binnenkomst kwam een buurman die onder ons zat even langs of we wat zachter konden doen met rondlopen. Zelf geen geluiden gehoord.

Location was great - across from the beautiful Municipal Gardens. Three blocks from a large Grocery store (Pingo Dulce). Fairly quiet street. Close to many restaurants, taxi stand, and attractions.

We were in the Bual Apartment which is on the second floor with 4 small balconies that look out over the gardens (across the street). The balconies are not deep, so you can stand on them but not put a chair on them). The apartment is very large (especially the living room and master bedroom). It had two bedrooms (king sized bed and two twin/single beds), a long hallway, living room (with a comfortable sleeper sofa (but the leg was broken on one side - we just put some books under it and it was sturdy), one bathroom with a large shower, a dining room, kitchen, and laundry room (washer only).

There were 3 air conditioners (both bedrooms and the living room). I'm a light sleeper (in the room with 2 twin beds) and the air conditioner made a loud noise when it cycled on and off. I had to shut it off and sleep under a thin sheet at night - otherwise I would be startled awake every 5 minutes. The rest of my family did not seem to have this problem with their air conditioners (but they are deep sleepers).

After checkout on the last day we wanted to leave our bags somewhere on the property to have one more day to tour Funchal, but the staff at Blandy's Wine Museum/store didn't seem to have any idea what to do with the bags. The staff were friendly and spoke English well, but maybe no one had ever asked them to store their luggage before? The property is fairly large with several buildings, many rooms, and lots of closets, but they did not offer any place to keep our bags. I found a place on my own (in a room at the bottom of the apartment stairs) which worked for us, but I cannot promise that is was secure, as staff or other guests could gain access to the room. We lucked out and all of our stuff was there when we returned.
Loud air conditioner in one bedroom. People in the master bedroom had to walk through the living room to get to the hallway/bathroom. Would not be a problem for some people, but we had someone sleeping on the living room sofa.

Bardzo blisko nabrzeża portowego, oceanu i jednocześnie starówki Funchal z barami i restauracjami. Winiarnia i sklep z maderskimi winami w odległości do 50 metrów. Olbrzymi apartament z wielkimi pokojami i łóżkami (spokojnie na 6 osób). Super wyposażony: pralka z tabletkami piorącymi, zmywarka z tabletkami, ekspres do kawy z kapsułkami, toster. Duży plus za wodę i 2 wina na powitanie - bardzo miła niespodzianka.
Stare budownictwo ma swoje wady: skrzypiące podłogi, nie domykające się drzwi i okna, ale to są rzeczy do zaakceptowania. Brak tarasu na którym można by było miło spędzić wieczór z ukochaną osobą oraz z lampką maderskiego wina.
Wady: łazienka ewidentnie do pilnego remontu, pleśń, wąż prysznicowy do wymiany, bardzo nieprzyjemny zapach kanalizacji roznoszący się niestety na cały apartamant. Uszkodzona kanapa w salonie.
Park miejski naprzeciwko budynku bylby fajną opcją, ale my trafiliśmy akurat na tydzień jazzowy i codziennie od ok 19:00 do 22:00 grałabardzo głośno muzyka i trzeba było uciekać z apartamentu ( akurat nasza rodzina za jazz'em nie przepada).
Minus: Brak możliwości zostawienia bagaży po wymeldowaniu na 2 godziny: od 12-tej a przed transwerem na lotnisko o 14-tej. Chyba brak dobrej woli nie tyle wynajmującej agencji ile właściciela budynku/apartamentu.

We spent three days in this charming old fashioned apartment, with a lot of space and light. The location is paramount, at the center of the city, in a very nice setting overlooking the municipal garden. The surroundings are a bit noisy at times but the flat is well isolated. This large apartment is located in the same house as Blandys. Apart from a small issue with the electronic lock at checkin, our stay was excellent.The apartment was large enough for 5 persons. Buena ubicación. Zona tranquila con tiendas, supermercados y restaurantes.
Parking a 10 minutos caminando por 3,40€ al día. (Parking Santa Lucia)
Apartamento grande, limpio y equipado con todo lo necesario.

Tolle Zentrale Lage alles in Funchal schnell erreichbar. Toller Altbau mit hohen Decken. Gute Betreuung bei Problemen.
Ist aus meiner Sicht nicht für mehr als 4 Erwachsene geeignet. Schlafcouch ist unbequem ,schlief schon auf einigen und diese sticht heraus. Unmöglich auf dieser zu zweit zu schlafen. Zudem müssen mitreisende aus dem Hauptschlafzimmer immer das Wohnzimmer passieren was bei einem Altbau selbst für einen Ninja schwer wird.

Nice Flat in a old Townhouse. For the reason it is old you will have aus well some noises like creaking blanks.
From my sight only comfy for four Adults.

Excellent location close to centre of Funchal, comfortable, spacious, well-equipped, generally quiet - an ideal place to stay in Funchal. No lift, but good wide stairway not too steep so easy even with suitcases. Helpful staff and arrangements for transfers to/from airport made through An Island Apart worked perfectly.

Great location next to a wonderful park right in the city center. The apartment has the charm of an old building and the interior is beautiful. The apartment is spacious and the kitchen is well equipped. There is even a utility room!
The building is old and beautiful, but on the flip side there are certain flaws: the shower is lousy and the floors creak. There is a strange smell downstairs.

This whole apartment was absolutely amazing. It was huge, beautiful and we loved it. I have to say huge thank you to Fabio, who was there to help us if we needed anything!
Apartment is right at city center with beautiful location next to gardens. If you rent a car i recommend you to stay in Parque 2000 - it cost 4,5 € for a day and it works 24 hours. Definetely recomment over La Vie Funchal or Arcades San Francisco.

The property is in prime location. Right by old town Funchal. The building is also part of an old wine cellar and like most buildings in old town Funchal, beautifully designed and built many many years ago.
The building had a bit of an odd smell in the community areas but given how old it is, perfectly normal and the bathroom seemed to smell every so often which I think came from outside, possibly the pipes or something along those lines.

Sehr stilvolles Apartment in top Lage! Das Apartment hat Geschichte, ist gut ausgestattet und hat einen wundervollen Ausblick auf den Stadtgarten. Wir mögen diese Atmosphäre sehr und waren deshalb schon öfters hier.

Die Kommunikation mit dem Vermieter läuft neuerdings über eine eigene Plattform, das werte ich neutral, auch wenn ich persönlich lieber alle Informationen direkt auf einer Plattform (booking.com) habe.
Der Altbau weist auch kleine Nachteile auf: der Wasserdruck im 2.Stock ist gering und die Toilette/Bad roch nach Kanal.
Im Stiegenhaus roch es an einigen Tagen unangenehm aus dem Müllraum - das war aber offenbar ein temporäres Problem.

The apartment was great in many ways: size, cleanness, appliances, sound proofing. There's really nothing negative to mention. Just a heads up that, if you have a car, it can be a bit tricky to find free parking but that comes with the central location.

Location was perfect overlooking the beautiful trees in the garden square and so close to all the shops, restaurants and other amenities and tourist sites - - walked to everything. Loved the layout of apartment too. Worked well for family of five.
Some smell emanating from bathroom plumbing. We kept door closed and toilet lid down which helped.

Прекрасные апартаменты в центре города с видом на парк. Апартаменты удобные и просторные, внутри чисто и очень красиво. В апартаментах есть всё для удобства, кондиционер в каждой комнате, полностью укомплектованная кухня.
Санузел немного пахнет канализацией, не критично, но приятнее было бы без запаха.

Очень скрипучие полы. Если дети спят чутко, то только летать по коридорам, когда они спят.
