Live the centenary history of Madeira Embroidery in an apartment with excellent design and memories of regional culture.
Right in the centre of Funchal, right next to the Farmers Market, this fantastic apartment offers you all the convenience.
Set in a building that housed an old Madeira Embroidery Factory, this property is divided into six independent fractions, each named after well-known Madeira Embroidery stitching.
With a modern and functional architecture, these studios have small notes that take you back to the past and make you know a little about the embroidery of the island. With two bedroom with double bed, two bathroom and fully equipped kitchen, the apartment has the capacity to accommodate four people.
For those who like to enjoy a good time of relaxation, you can enjoy the pleasant communal terrace, available on the rooftop of the building, which has a kitchen, so you can cook your meals.
On the same terrace there is a common laundry room to the building.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW
Drapes is situated in a privileged central area, right in the heart of Funchal. Within a few steps from the famous Farmers’ Market (Mercado dos Lavradores) and the historic centre of Funchal (locally known as ‘Zona Velha’), from here you can explore by foot many of the main tourist attractions of our beautiful town. (e.g. The Cable Car, Funchal Marina, CR7 Museum, Cathedral, Madeira Wine Lodge, etc ...)
Just right in front of the building you have an excellent connection to the local and intercity bus network, connecting you to all places in the island, and covering both the east and west regions, so that it will not be necessary to go far in case you want to benefit from these services. In addition to these facilities, the building has a shopping centre with several shops, cafés, restaurants and a medium-sized supermarket.
GETTING AROUND
With a bus stop practically at the doorstep, transport will be no problem for our guests.
Although a aerobus bus stop for airport arrivals and departures is within 2 minutes walk distance from the flat, we recommend the private transfer service as the best option to get to the flat. Contact us in advance to schedule a private transfer car with our local partners. It is cheaper than taking a taxi by your own in the airport!
GUEST ACCESS
Guests have access to all areas of the flat.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS
- According to Portuguese law, all guests are required to present a valid ID. (E.g. passport, identity card).
- Check-in must be scheduled in advance. In case the check-in is not scheduled within a maximum of 48 hours prior arrival, guests will be subject to the availability of our team.
- All bed linen and towels are provided. We can also provide a crib, a baby high chair and a baby bathtub if needed. First aid kit, fire extinguisher and fire blanket are available in all properties.
ATTENTION
Please be advised that a Tourist Fee will be charged to all persons staying overnight in the municipality of Funchal. Thus, all customers staying in tourist resorts and/or accommodation establishments, aged 13 or over, will be charged €2.00 per person/night, up to a maximum of 7 nights and a maximum of €14.00 per person/stay. When you arrive, you will receive a link to pay this municipal tax.

The entrance from the street is always crowded as it is a public transport stop. Parking next to the apartments in shopping centres is only for an extra charge, about 0.30euro/ 15 minutes. Next to Beco Da Nora street there are free parking spaces or 2.50 all day parking next to the football field.

Property was clean and tidy and staff were able to accommodate our request for us to drop our bags early (due to an early flight) and return after property was ready.
Good number of utensils / plates / cutlery etc.
Property was two separate 1 bed apartments with an interlocking door which was opened as we had both rooms. One apartment had a nespresso machine which was nice.
Very nice roof top terrace
Can't think of anything that was important that we didn't like.

Anfangs war der Code beim Eingang zum öffnen der Tür anders. Wir erfuhren dann durch die Putzfrau den richtigen Code.
Küche war nicht ganz sauber geputzt, war aber nicht schlimm. Die Lage ist top, 5 Minuten zum Hafen. Direkt eine Bushaltestelle vor der eingangstür. Teilweise war sie zugesperrt von anderen Mensxhen, war aber nicht schlimm, die machten immer platz.

Nous étions 2 couples et nous avons beaucoup apprécié l’intimité offerte par le fonctionnement des deux appartements indépendants communicants.
En revanche du bruit de la rue et de la boutique du dessous pour ce logement du premier étage, plutot à conseiller aux urbains qui ont l’habitude d’avoir un peu de bruit

Hluk. Každé ráno pravidelné bouchání a z chodby do bytu šlo všechno slyšet. Byt 1B. Byt 1A jen v kuchynce.
V bytě 1B není denní světlo a nevyvětráte si, okna do zdi a hučiciho “komínu”

Waren een aantal dingen kapot/defect bij aankomst. er is een keer een monteur langs geweest helaas niet voor elk probleem.
Bedden mogen een topmatras hebben je voelt de veren zitten.

Das eine Appartment geht zum Hinterhof, hat abgedunkelte Fenster und 2 davon lassen sich nur einen Spalt öffnen . Um Hinterhof läuft eine sehr laute, große Lüftungsanlage.
Das andere Appartement geht auf eine viel befahrene Straße mit der Bushaltestelle direkt unterhalb der Fenster., Ist etwas laut.

Great location in the centre of Funchal, walking distance from the seaside promenade, the market, the cathedral, the cable cars and several museums.
The apartment felt spacious and was very clean.
There was plenty of equipment in the kitchen and a supermarket next door so it was really easy to cook our own food when we didn't feel like going to a restaurant (but there are plenty of good restaurants in walking distance too).
The bed was comfortable with good pillows, and my toddler liked the travel cot provided by the host.
The terrace at the top is very nice to relax with a beautiful view.
The host team were responsive and friendly.
The (potential) cons:
Be aware that it is on a busy road so depending if you get an apartment facing the road it can be a bit noisy - if you're sensitive to traffic noise this might not be the place for you. We had the first floor apartment and I was woken up by the shop downstairs raising their shutters each morning as well (this might not be a problem on the higher floors).
There are also stairs to get to all the apartments as well as to the washing machine and bin store (not to mention the roof terrace). So if you struggle with stairs this might not be the place for you.
My partner complained there wasn't enough hot water in the morning. But I shower in the evening and I always had hot water.
As others commented, the fold-out tables are not as good as having a proper dining table but we found it fine.

Ventilation could be better especially for the backside apartment

We found a dead cockroach on the stairs in the stairwell, which was not removed until 4 days despite reporting it to staff. After cleaning the flat halfway through our stay, a large number of ants appeared in the unused kitchen - apartment has . One of the bedrooms in the back of the building has windows onto the technical equipment of the shopping centre, making it impossible to open the window - there is a lot of noise and smell of grease. The internet has no wifi coverage in one of the bedrooms.
